"My interest in the outdoors was sparked off as a young boy when I used to read survival books and go on camping trips with the Scouts. My first solo trip was at 15 when I ventured 4 miles from home off to the forest with a sleeping bag and some string to stay the night, I made a fire, an A-Frame shelter from fallen twigs, leaves, Bracken and bedded down for the night. Early the next morning I felt great, I packed up and headed the 4 miles home, the experience was very peaceful almost spiritual. As I started down the hill I saw an adult badger coming towards me using the same grassy footpath less than 15 feet and nearing, I swear that to this day if I had not have said “Good morning!” to him he would have walked right into me, totally oblivious!! Its precious gifts like these and others that keep me returning to nature when ever I can. We really want people to appreciate nature and the outdoors, we have a duty to teach our children to respect and protect nature.
